Long Haul Report 2015

The sun is shining on long haul holiday hotspots this autumn and winter as the strength of sterling has helped prices plummet by up to 41%. The annual Long Haul Report from Post Office Travel Money reveals that prices for tourist items are down in half of the 33 resorts surveyed.

Key findings include:

  • Far East holiday resorts are good bets this winter with Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Malaysia all in the top 10 for value
  • Indonesia’s best-known island, Bali, is the cheapest resort surveyed for the third year running, followed closely by Cape Town in South Africa
  • Prices are down by 21.5% in Tokyo – and by 50% since 2013 – making Japan an increasingly affordable holiday option
  • The biggest price falls are in Penang, where the barometer basket of tourist items has plummeted 41% year-on-year, taking the Malaysian island to 10th place
  • Costs are also lower in safari favourite, Kenya, the world’s theme park capital, Orlando, and Mexico’s most popular beach resort, Cancun
  • Destinations ‘down under’ are benefiting from a sterling surge as UK holidaymakers can expect to get 21% more Australian dollars and 23% more New Zealand dollars than last autumn – that’s around £90 extra on a £500 foreign exchange transaction

Up to 70 currencies can be pre-ordered at over 11,500 Post Office branches or online at for next day branch or home delivery, and a wide range of long haul currencies are available on demand at over 1,600 larger Post Office branches. Long haul holidaymakers can also carry cash on the Post Office Travel Money Card. In addition to the sterling, Swiss franc and euro cards, the Travel Money Card is also available in US dollars, Australian dollars, Canadian dollars, New Zealand dollars and South African rand.

The Post Office Long Haul Report barometer table is compiled from a combination of data supplied by the long haul specialist Travelbag and national or regional tourist offices of participating countries, except five of the six US destinations (excluding Orlando), which were supplied by Brand USA. Resorts featured are chosen as representative of the prices that UK holidaymakers will generally find in the country/destination. Random online checks were made to authenticate these prices.
